Mary's Artist Statement

My first oil painting was completed when I was 14 years of age. It was a painting of moonlight filtering through a stand of redwoods. Perhaps it was an early indication of my future passion to study oils and landscape painting.

Although receiving a formal education in art, I still consider myself mostly self-taught. Life’s experiences and personal study have all woven together to develop and refine my artistic vision.

A native of Traverse City, I moved to Grand Rapids in 1991 after 15 years in Owosso, Michigan.

In the late 90’s, employment with a landscaper/horticulturist took me out of a dark office into the outdoors and provided a rich opportunity to observe and study the land firsthand. Several paintings resulted from this time, and further encouraged me to begin to paint full-time. In addition to direct observation of nature, I also am inspired by visual themes from the Scriptures, such as vineyards, the heavens, and sheep. My camera is always with me, ready to capture a moment in time for future reference.

It might surprise people, but most of the time I do not consider myself an “artist”, just someone who happens to be excited about oil paint, the land, and God’s creation. I feel like I have only scratched the surface and will always be learning until my last breath. And learning from those around me.
